Here it is – Wired Jesus Podcast #2. Besides including the thanks you mentioned in the previous post, I take a look at the phenom of reality shows as an expression of real community in the postmodern world, specifically ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover. Its hard to say who learned from who – reality shows from the Early Church or if the Church needs to learn from reality shows. Either way, their success in the ratings points to something deeper – a hunger for authentic caring communities in a lonely world and the open door for the church to become that for a new generation.

Here are some links to check out that I mention in the podcast.

Hey Tom, thanks for the podcasts. I listened to both today. Great job! You speak well and handle the complexities of postmodern culture and chr. faith with grace and compassion. Well done.

Hi Tom. Greetings from an ELCA tribeswoman. I really enjoy your show, especially yesterday’s. My husband and I, too, make a Sunday night ritual of watching “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.” There are few shows that are on my “must watch” list these days, but this one’s at the top, if for no other reason than it has got to be the single most uplifting and life-affirming program out there. Your comments were right on.

I liked the way you tied it in with the idea of community. I hadn’t looked at it that way before, but it’s true. It is refreshing to hear about church people who are less concerned about building “community” (read: membership rolls) through evangelizing, and instead know how to listen, and to work with people of all faiths to meet the needs of the community that they already live in.

I look forward to your next show!
