Lately I have given a great deal of thought to the state of Christian music. There seems to still be the ongoing split between “traditional” and “contemporary”, although its mostly in existing congregations. The battle is largely over in new church starts, where its band over organ from day one. The problem seems to that even while part of the church wants to live and sing prior to the 19th Century, another part only wants to hear praise and worship music from the 80s and 90s. In the meantime, most of the culture is listening to music that isn’t like either one anymore, so the church is missing out. So where do you find music that connects with the journey of faith with Jesus that doesn’t sound like funeral music or an evangelical version of the Osmonds?

Ok, as you know this is my first Wired Jesus listen and I found it great. It was awesome. 🙂

    Hey there Tom,

Been with your podcast for forever and still get a thrill when it pops up in my iTunes refresh and I know I get to spend my commute with you.

Music and specifically Christian music has been a thing for me all my Christian life, too. When I first got serious (some might say Born Again, though I don’t know if the cultural connotations of that term apply to me so much), the first thing I did was go out to see if I could find music that reflected my newfound passion. It was a tough search in a small town in the era of the LP—so I ended up with the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack as the closest thing I could find. It’s still one of my fav albums of all time.

But you are right, the internet is a wealth. I like Pete’s podcast ok, but I need something a little more edgy that he puts out.

For those who like it a little more fierce (ok, a lot more fierce), I recommend RadioU.com. It’s the website and stream for a cutting edge Christian music station in Ohio (and growing worldwide)that makes Klove look like it’s standing still. They even have a music video station pumpin out the hard stuff.

Also, podcast wise, I enjoy the HM magazine podcast and the Tooth and Nail pocast. The artists we find on these venues make my kids non-Christian friends jealous when I take them to concerts.

Also, you might want to check out the artist Mindy Smith–she’s back in the folky genre and doesn’t label herself as a ‘Christian’ artist, but she’s got some awsome God talk in her lyrics and some seriously smooth production value.

    Thanks for the podcast—keep’em coming!
