Here is the long awaited interview with one of my 8th grade catechism students.. Greg had asked to job shadow me for a day – a requirement in our middle school on their vocation day – and so we did a podcast about how he understands God, faith, and Jesus. There are no links at the moment, I might add some later but got to run right right now.

i’d be interested in hearing a follow-up interview with him in a few months. you could put out a blogosphere request for questions, could be interesting.

    peace.

That was a very interesting interview.
I think it is great that he is thinking that deeply about faith at his age.

    You have a great show!

I’m sorry, did i misunderstand? David and Goliath is symbolic? not true?

  5. Tom Lyberg says:

True, yes, in what God desires to speak to us about his relationship to David and how that is reflected in his relationship with us. However, if you are talking about historical “fact” – the Bible isn’t clear. In 2 Samuel 21:19, it is one of David’s warrior’s, Elhannan, who kills Goliath and later Goliath’s brother.

Much like the book of Jonah, much is made over the issue of whether Jonah was swallowed by a great fish (only 3 verses out of 4 chapters) rather than the truth of God’s unexpected grace and astounding forgiveness.

Out of our tradition, we have no fixed teaching on the bible beyond it is “our norm for life and faith.” So with this, truth is greater than fact, which makes sense to Greg – he understands the truth of God’s action and love when he is no longer burdened by the unbelievable “fact” (for him) of a little boy killing a giant.

Faith comes in stages and so does dealing with the Scriptures. Make it all or nothing all the time and you lose postmoderns like Greg.

Does that answer your question, Kim?
